You need a boot that will keep your feet dry, offer support and hug your foot without rubbing it the wrong way because if it's rubbing you the wrong way, you've got a long day of aches and pains ahead of you.

While all brands claim that their work boots are the best on the market, you don’t want to find out the truth the hard way. We have our own opinion on the best work boot brands, but you should still make your own assessment.

Not only must you consider price and durability, but you must also consider all of the features of that comfortable work boots for men typically have so that your footwear pushes you forward rather than holding you back.

Every man/woman has a different opinion when it comes to comfort, but overall, the most comfortable pair of work boot should:

  • Be Waterproof yet breathable
  • Have shock-absorbing AND Anti-fatigue technology
  • Have shafts for GREAT ankle support
  • Be lightweight and flexible

Of course, you may require a mix of the above features + safety features, but this article is all about finding the holy grail in comfortable work boots whatever that may be for you!

Here's your guide to selecting work boots that are going to keep your feet feeling great, all day long:

What Features should you be looking for?

Your work boots are an essential on-the-job tool when you work in hazardous environments. Not only does industrial footwear keep your feet and your toes safe from the dangers they will face during the day ahead, it will keep you comfortable so that you can focus on the task at hand rather than foot pain.

As you start to compare various work boot styles from the best work boot guys in the industry, you will quickly find that sifting through your options can be a painful process.

The best way to start shopping is to familiarize yourself with all of the best features that you should be looking for on your shopping trip. Technology within the footwear industry has been on the up and up for quite some time. The safety and comfort features that did not exist less than a decade ago are now common in most great work boots, so you need to find the real winners.

Here are the top features to look for when comfort and safety are your two top priorities:

Safety Toes

There are typically three different types of safety toes: aluminum, steel, or composite. You must consider your work environment and your own personal preference when you are choosing.

Steel toes are the most traditional choice but often become extremely cold in environments where the temperatures are getting chilly.

Aluminum toes offer heavy protection in a lightweight design. Composite toes, which are the newest option, are preferred by those who want something that does not conduct the cold, but they are also the bulkiest choice.

So, when it comes to comfort and safety toes, Choose the right type of toe for your individual work environment, and look for boots that sport an extra-wide steel toe, which will mean more room to move.

Look for an extra wide safety toe when looking for the most comfortable steel toe boots. Some boots are actually made to have wider toe-spaces!

If you're not required to have steel toes, and it's just pure comfort you're looking for, we recommend choosing composite toe work boots, over steel.

Why? For a few reasons:

  • You will never set off metal detectors (this can be a pain if your job requires frequent scanning)
  • composite toes are lightweight (you will feel more spring in your step)
  • They are just as tough, if not tougher than steel toes
  • There is a rumor that steel toes could break (if something extremely heavy were to drop on them) and slice your toes off in the process, OUCH! we actually busted this myth, so learn more about that here.
  • Composite toes will not conduct the cool, so if you work in colder climates, they are definitely the pick (steel toes can get very cold, very fast)

Most guards are in-built but there is an external option

Metatarsal Guards

The metatarsals, located on the top side of the foot, were often forgotten in the past, but are now coming back in fashion. Think of them as an extension of the steel toes, protecting more of your foot against heavy falling objects. Their main job is the protect the arch of the top part of your foot.

You have two options when it comes to metatarsal guards:

  • Boots with an inbuilt guard
  • external, strap on guards

These are vital if there's a good chance you will drop something heavy on your feet, but can add quite a bit of weight and bulk to your work boots, so avoid this feature if you don't really need it. Ideal for stopping debris getting into your shoes, so if you are a welder? these are vital for you. Check out more about Metatarsal work boots here.

Soles

The soles can make all the difference when you work on your feet all day. They will mean the difference between a good day and a painful day.

Not only do you need a durable sole that can withstand the elements, but you also need a sole that provides support so that every step is not painful. Rubber outsoles are slip-resistant and provide maximum traction, Thermal Poly-Urethane is chemical-resistant, and ethylene-vinyl acetate out-soles are lightweight and extremely flexible.

Think about your work environment, and then choose the sole which is right for you. For additional comfort and support, think about adding some great insoles to your boots.

Most often work boots with a wedge-shaped sole (such as this work boot) will leave you with very comfortable boots.

How the boot is made

Work boots can be constructed in a number of ways, and the construction type is directly related to how the boot will perform.

In fact, if you want a comfortable and extremely durable boot, you really need to understand the different construction methods.

There are two methods you should be aware of:

  • Cement construction, and;
  • Goodyear welt construction

If the boot uses the cement construction method, the sole is cemented directly onto the upper sole. This means your boot will be very lightweight and highly flexible, and of course, very comfortable. The only disadvantage is durability: once the sole is worn down, it’s unrepairable, so it’s time for some new work boots.

Shoes that use the Goodyear Welt Construction method are also a popular choice. No, this has nothing to do with Goodyear car tires thank you very much! Goodyear welt construction is a method whereby a “welt” of leather is sewn around the bottom edge of a shoe. This stitching (the welt seam) attaches the welt to both the insole and the upper of the shoe. The result: It will leave you with a  very comfortable work boot, which is flexible and has extreme durability; as you have the option of replacing the soles many times.

Cement construction will leave you with the most comfortable boots, and Goodyear welt will leave you with a nice combination of comfort and durability. either choice is great, and both options will keep your feet happy in the comfort department.
